Over the last several years, it’s become a rare event to see a player using a wood lacrosse stick. Although these are, for the most part, still legal for all levels of play, these sticks–also called shafts–have been almost totally replaced by manmade materials. You’ll find current shafts made of:

  • Aluminum
  • Titanium
  • Scandium or Scandium-Titanium Alloy
  • Carbon Fiber
  • and occasionally fiberglass

While wooden sticks are basically old school, there is beauty in having a truly handmade piece of equipment. Take a look at this 5-minute video from Discovery Channel’s “How It’s Made” series showing the process — start to finish — of making a hickory wood shaft by hand. Maybe you’ll change your mind!
